Stairs, handrails and trim, finished by hand — no runs, no lap marks.
Stair treads, handrails, newel posts, balusters, interior doors and trim. Stain is unforgiving in a way paint is not: it soaks in, so every lap mark, drip and missed spot stays visible for the life of the wood.
That means it gets done by hand, one piece at a time, wiped back within the working window and top-coated once the stain has actually cured. There is no fast version of this that also looks right.
Why this matters here
Almost every two-story home in this corridor was built with an oak staircase, and almost none of them have been refinished since. A staircase is the first thing anyone sees walking in, and it is the cheapest room-sized upgrade in the house.
